A16Z invests $ 40 million in Stack Exchange

Joel Spolsky, CEO and co-founder of Stack Exchange yesterday, reported on a successful completed investment round from Andreessen Horowitz and partners. The well-known venture capital investor did not spare $ 40 million to develop the popular Q & A ecosystem for developers.

In the 5 years since the founding of the Stack Overflow, 133 communities have sprung from it. Joel himself compares this phenomenon with the medieval maps of the world, where the center has always been a large and well-known city (Babylon, Rome, Jerusalem), and around it are many small villages. Now the "village", as well as the "population", that is, the number of visitors and registered users, is growing by 25% every month.

The statistics is such that today the Stack Exchange network of sites is in the top 50 in the USA. The company itself employs over 200 people around the world, in the offices of Denver, New York and London, as well as being removed from their own homes. As Spolsky notes, more than half of them are exclusively employed by Stack Overflow Careers, the main monetization tool of the company.

Naturally, the largest of all communities is the Q & A service for Stack Overflow developers, which receives more than 40 million unique visitors every month. Statistics on the whole ecosystem of the Stack are as follows: 300 million unique visitors for 2014 and a total of 3.8 million registered users.

In total, last year alone, 3.1 million questions were asked on the Stack Exchange, 4.5 million answers were written, 2.7 million edits were made and, finally, 17 million comments were left.
