Cocos creator

A month ago, the Chinese released Cocos Creator . What it is? It's like Unity3d, only with 2 sim cards and a TV. And for free.

Surprisingly, this rather significant news for game developers in Habré went unnoticed.

Now I will correct this misunderstanding and briefly tell you about Cocos Creator (if at all this is a superstructure over Cocos2d, repeating the Unity editor).

The Chinese copied everything. Scene editor, hierarchy, object inspector, in general, who worked in Unity will figure it all out pretty quickly. Even in the documentation they wrote what exactly to Unity corresponds to (9:07 on video). Also implemented component-oriented approach.

The list of games made on Cocos is impressive , there are hits that you must have seen in the tops. Naturally, they were all made without Cocos Creator. With the new editor, the engine will be even more attractive.

After a quick acquaintance with the engine (I twisted it literally half an hour and collected test scenes on iOS / Android) I can say that the Chinese are great. Very impressive. Compared to Unity, Unity's main trump cards are cross-platform, Asset Store, and a large community. Cocos Creator is cross-platform comparable (desktop / mobile, there is HTML5 for the web, which I think is a big plus for Asian markets, but not compiled for consoles), there is a certain analogue of Asset Store - there are some advertising platforms and analytics, but Overall, pretty sad so far. The community is still very small compared to Unity.

The advantages of Cocos include a higher compilation speed of the project under the web and (subjectively, tests did not do) the execution speed. At least I can confirm the words from this post that Unity 5 generates a brake code for Android. Projects compiled for Unity 4 run faster and without FPS drawdowns, in contrast to those transferred to Unity 5.

Well, the biggest plus is open source and free. Against the background of Unity, which not only costs 4500 for 1 developer (Pro + iOS + Android), plus a subscription to Cloud Build 25 bucks a month, everything is free. Whoever bought everything is unlikely to move, but beginners can view this editor.

C ++ support is promised in July. So far, unfortunately, it is not. At the same time, they promise a full-fledged Asset Store (Editor extension market in their terminology).

In general, I think that Cocos Creator will compete with Unity and UE4, at least in the development of 2d games. And its pricing policy may force a review of the price tag on Unity.
