On the way to getting rid of patent dependence

Verizon, Google, Cisco, Ericsson, Hewlett-Packard were among the 20 high-tech companies united in an alliance called the Allied Security Trust, WSJ Online reports , citing sources in the industry. The organization aims to buy up patents from third parties in order to protect themselves against possible lawsuits from vulture companies whose main activity is in constant litigation with business leaders.

Each member of the alliance will contribute $ 250 thousand to the share capital. The resulting tidy sum, however, can only cover all future costs of AST from a rather optimistic point of view. According to a large influence of the Coalition for Patent Justice (CPF) lobbyist group in the USA, for almost 15 years the number of lawsuits in cases of patent infringement has been growing, not knowing the recessions. In October last year in America at the same time there were already 2,500 such proceedings.

The creation of the Security Trust is a necessary measure that could not be postponed further in light of the modest pace of the Patent Reform Act 2007 patent amendments in the US Parliament.

Despite the fact that in the business press, the process of passing the amendments and such initiatives by business giants are mainly presented in a positive manner, it is obvious that all this leads to greater control of large companies over the development of the industry and the suppression of existing rights of independent entrepreneurs.
