If the “.LOG” code sequence is located at the beginning of the file opened by the program, then after opening the current date and time is added to the end of the file and the cursor is positioned after it. This little-known documented feature that exists at least with Windows 95 ( Checked in XP — works ) allows the editor to be used for taking notes or observations. Apparently, the limitation of the size of the text file for which it works has also been preserved: along with the date and time there should be no more than 30,000 bytes, although modern versions of Notepad can work with large files.
If you start Notepad with the command line key /.setup, then after launch, Notepad will “freeze” - its window will not be drawn, although it will work correctly. (For example, in such Notepad, you can type text blindly, and save it to a file on disk.) To exit this “hung” notepad, you can use the Esc key, or Ctrl-D.
