Life incidents

Internet in inept hands - terrible power. This force becomes especially terrible when network administrators forget elementary things. Often this is the fault of the administrators of small local providers when deploying networks for users. In part, as it seems to me, this is due to a lack of funding - while keeping prices competitive, they cannot afford to hire experienced admins to “just pull” the cable to the apartments.

A funny incident happened to me the other day when I set up the Internet for one of my acquaintances. A person is connected to Peterstar via a Dlink ADSL modem with one ethernet output. In order not to blame the whole Peterstar for nothing - at one time I had Internet from them, I want to clarify that it was happening on Vasilyevsky Island.

Having started the setup, I, as the most intelligent one, first of all registered all the necessary settings in the modem, since the instruction was at hand. After that, I switched it to bridge mode, because it seemed to me more convenient - before the setting was made so that it was necessary to connect from the Windows separately. Having done everything, saved the changes and sent it to reboot. After the reboot, I found that the ping is normal, dns rezolvitsya, but the sites are not loaded. Not realizing the reasons for this behavior, I again tried to access the modem via the web interface (192.168.1.1), forgetting that it works as a bridge for me.

For five minutes I tried to understand the reasons for the change in the appearance of the management interface (I didn’t give this attention to the first two minutes and just tried to find statistics, but I didn’t succeed). After rebooting the modem several times, I slapped my forehead - it dawned on me that they were saying “I’ve got my feet in my mouth, but now I am on the Peterstar router”. After checking my hunch, I found several dozens in the list of dhcp clients. Surely it was one of the routers at the local ATC.

After this incident, Peterstar took my place in the list of companies whose services I will not use.

Threat Internet in the end I set up. :)
