Mozilla has quietly, quietly, announced this Friday the launch of a new project - Project Tofino in its own blog on medium , which some have already managed to christen as the “Firefox killer”.

There is every reason for such an opinion. In recent years, Firefox is rapidly losing its market share, unable to withstand the onslaught of Google Chrome. Project Tofino is designed to radically change the look of the Mozilla browser and update it, thereby initiating the “return” of lost market share. The Tofino team so far consists of only six people. They will be engaged in designing and designing a new product of the company.

"Since the days of Firefox 1.0, browsers on personal computers and mobile devices have changed a lot," said Mark Mayo, senior vice president of the Firefox project, "we have long needed a fresh look."

Project Torfino abandoned the Gecko engine , on the basis of which Firefox is built, and turned its eyes on the Electron project, which is based on Chromium . At the same time, Mozilla is not going to bury Firestone and will continue to support and develop its old browser. But the fact is that to keep up with Chrome in its current form, Firefox is not capable, therefore Project Tofino was launched.

UPD1. As noted below in the vxd_dev and vedro9 comments , in general, the Mozilla leadership positions Project Tofino as a platform for experimenting with the UI and then returning to Geco's native Mozilla engine when it comes to release. The Electron itself based on Chromium was chosen because of its comfort as a tool for prototyping.
