Five reasons why we refused the Russian translation of the conference “Piter Py”

Once a year we gather in St. Petersburg python-programmers from different parts of the world to listen to the reports and talk. We believe that conferences are not for learning, but for communication and exchange of experience. Coming to the conference to listen to what you can read on stackoverflow in five minutes is not the best occupation. Coming to communicate with fellow developers, discuss the industry, and enjoy positive energy is the right way to make the most of the conference opportunities.



On April 22 and 23, the Pitery Py conference will be held for the third time. And this time we decided to consciously go for a risky experiment - the first stream of reports on both days will be entirely in English and no simultaneous translation. On “Piter Py”, only 1 person will speak, for whom native English is Cris Ewing (USA). For speakers who come to us from different parts of Europe: Italy (Nicola Iarocci), Germany (Hynek Schlawack), Ireland (Simone Soldateschi), England (Fabio Natali) and France (Gael Varoquaux) English is not as native as for us.

In English, on their own initiative, several of our compatriots will speak: Sergey Matveyenko, Dmitry Nazarov and Vladimir Shulyak, Alexander Chistyakov, as well as Maxim Klimishin from Ukraine. In addition, all conference materials will be in English only: participant's booklet, badges, programs.

1. The official language of the IT industry is English. All over the world, all IT professionals communicate in English. Not only at conferences, but also at mitapaps in multilingual Europe, communicate in English so that colleagues from neighboring countries can participate. At different times there were different languages ​​of communication focused on countries that were experts in a particular field: at the time of intellectual and artistic dawn, it was French, at the time of dawn of revival architecture Italian, at the time of technical progress German.

2. To be a part of the global IT community, we need to learn how to talk to our colleagues in the same language. If we cannot do this, then we will live behind the iron curtain, only this time only we ourselves will be guilty of this.



3. In order for experts from other countries to come to us, we must learn to accept them. Remembering Piter Py # 2 - we saw how our foreign speakers missed after their speech. They did not have the opportunity to listen to other reports due to the lack of knowledge of the Russian language. But we want the speakers to come to us again and again, and could not only read their reports, but also learn something new from us for themselves.

4. We believe that our audience is people with a broad outlook, open to new experiences. It seems to us that those who are not ready for change lose a lot in their professional development.

5. We want to make the best conference that will contribute to the development of the Russian Python community and its integration into the global community.
