We have already
reported that the Android smartphone for the Intel RealSense Smartphone Developer Kit (SDK) was introduced at CES 2016 in Las Vegas. It is notable for the integrated camera Intel RealSense Camera ZR300 and support for Google Project Tango. Today we will talk about it in more detail.
Specifications
For a start - a little technical specifications. Hardware base devices - 4-core Intel Atom x7-Z8700 (Cherry Trail). Graphics processing deals with Gen 8 Intel HD Graphics. In addition to the unique camera ZR300, which we will touch on, the smartphone also has 8 megapixel rear and 2 megapixel front cameras that are quite usual for Android. The picture is complemented by a 6-inch touch QHD-display with a resolution of 2560x1440, 2 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal flash memory. A powerful platform complements Android 5.1.1.
Front smartphone looks quite familiar.

On the back of the device, from left to right, is everything that is called the Intel RealSense Camera ZR300. Namely:
- Right infrared camera.
- Color camera.
- Infrared laser projector.
- Left infrared camera.
- Short-focal wide-angle camera that supports motion recognition.
On the right side you can see the usual camera and the accompanying flash. ZR300, as can be seen from the location of its module on the device, is designed for shooting the outside world, and not the owner of the phone. Although no one bothers to do selfies with its help.
The laser projector is engaged in that imposes an infrared grid on objects to which it is directed. Two infrared cameras capture images. The spatial characteristics of objects are calculated by the method of pixel shift when analyzing images obtained from the left and right IR cameras.
The speed of processing data on the depth of space is more than 10 million points per second. In addition, the ZR300 includes a wide-angle camera with a VGA resolution and an angle of view of more than 160 degrees, with which a high-precision combination of accelerometer and gyroscope work. Such a complex is called a gyrostabilizer (Inertial Measurement Unit, IMU). This camera is used in tasks of tracking the movements of objects and the features of the scene.
High-quality spatial data of high density, which is capable of capturing a pair of ZR300 infrared cameras, can be used for three-dimensional scanning of people, rooms, things. This feature also helps in gestures recognition and positioning. The obtained data can be used for 3D-rendering of various objects, building depth maps and reconstruction of captured scenes. A wide-angle camera, gyrostabilizer and verified software mechanisms for synchronizing sensors (this is done using time stamps) allow the device to realize the capabilities of Google Project Tango. For example - navigation in the premises and the study of space.
Google Project Tango
Project Tango provides the mobile industry with three basic technologies: motion tracking, environmental research, and perception of the depth of space.
The technology of tracking movements uses a gyrostabilizer to determine the current position of the device in relation to the place of the start of movement. This approach can be used for indoor navigation without using GPS.
To study the environment, the method of simultaneous localization and mapping (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, SLAM) is used. Its essence is to combine data from space scanning and location tracking. This can be used as an “offset correction” in use scenarios where movement tracking is performed over fairly long periods of time.
The depth perception technology uses the ZR300 camera to create a cloud of points representing information about the depth of space and the location of various objects in front of the camera.
Results
Intel RealSense allows developers to implement features that enhance user interaction scenarios. Such as face tracking, creating a digital representation of the situation, the reconstruction of the environment. Here are the possibilities of photography with the support of the depth of space. For example, the correction of photography errors, the separation of plans for the image, measurements, the implementation of the parallax effect, the adjustment of the focus.
Armed with the Intel RealSense Smartphone Developer Kit (SDK), developers can start working on a new class of applications on a single Android platform, including support for Google Project Tango and the Intel RealSense Camera ZR300 camera.
