Mobile Linux Developers Teaming Up

The LiPS Forum and the LiMo Foundation, with the goal of bringing a unified Linux version for mobile devices to the market, decided to join forces.

The LiPS Forum (Linux Phone Standards Forum) was formed in 2005. The main objective of the organization is to develop standards for the use of Linux on portable devices. The LiPS initiative should help create programs that run on any mobile device with Linux. The forum includes many well-known companies, including Orange, France Telecom, MontaVista and Access.

The LiMo Foundation, in turn, earned early last year with the filing of Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics and Vodafone. LiMo is developing a unified Linux platform for mobile phones and communicators. The structure of this OS will include both open components and a number of high-level proprietary software interfaces. By the way, the first version of the LiMo platform has recently been released .

It is assumed that in the face of increasing competition in the mobile OS market, the unification of the LiPS Forum and LiMo Foundation teams will accelerate the development and commercialization of a unified Linux version for mobile phones and smartphones. In the future, this platform will have to become an alternative to the Google Android operating system, work on which is nearing completion.
