ICAAN has allowed the registration of any first-level domain names

Yesterday at a meeting of members of ICAAN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) - an organization that governs the assignment of domain names - it was decided to allow the registration of any first-level domain names.

The first level domain (for example, .habr) can be registered already in the second quarter of 2009. There are no details about the cost of such registration. Moreover, it is planned to conduct “rounds” of registrations, that is, applications for first-level domains will take a limited amount of time, after which ICAAN will consider the feasibility of registering each domain.

Trademarks will not be automatically registered, but ICAAN promises to protect their owners from cybersquatters.

At the same meeting, it was decided to allow the registration of domains containing characters of national alphabets - that is, the .pf domain will still be.

Read more about this in the ICAAN press release.

PS It turns out yesterday was a post on the topic . Now the decision is made.
