Student applications for KolibriOS projects within the framework of Google Summer of Code

March 25 ended with receiving applications from students in the framework of the Google Summer of Code . In total, 16 people applied, and some students applied for several projects at once. Applications were received from students from India (6), Spain (1), Russia (7), Ukraine (1), USA (1). And we had to decide on the number of projects whose financial support we ask from Google.

A total of 20 applications were submitted, which we divided into two parts. In the first part we included 17 applications, which coincided with our list of ideas. Most of the students who submitted these applications have already received test tasks and completed them. The test tasks were related to specific parts of KolibriOS and some solutions have already been included in SVN. Applications from the first group were submitted for 10 projects, which are presented in the table.

The second part included 3 applications that were submitted on the last day for projects that had not been coordinated in advance with the mentors (in general, during the campaign from students, we saw 4 proposed projects and it is good that the students think independently). These applications were also given special attention.

Given the multiple applications, we could choose up to 8 projects from the table. But gradually it turned out that some students had problems with registration of the Proof of Enrollment : 1) confirmation of study should be in English or have a duplicate part in English, 2) should be submitted on time, 3) ideally should be addressed to the organizers of the GSOC. The site lists several more reasons for the rejection of confirmation of studies and examples of completion. This problem also reduced the number of projects we can choose.

The list of mentors and administrators increased to 12 people, which is more than the number of projects we could choose.

Therefore, we had to discuss joint mentoring, as well as identify projects that we cannot refuse (since Google is unlikely to support all projects). As a result, we have applied for a certain number of projects and now Google will decide how many projects it will support. After the decision of Google, we will deal with the final selection of students for these projects.
