Many readers already know about computer security team competitions or CTF. Habré has several articles dedicated to such contests (

For those who read about this for the first time: CTF (Capture the flag) - team competition in computer security. In the classical sense: the team protects its server from attacks from other teams and tries to get the flag by hacking someone else’s server. There are also task-based: a number of tasks are given on steganography, cryptography, web administration, reverse engineering, recon (test for information search) and some others.
Our team from Samara for 6 years organizes such a competition, and this year was no exception. Already very soon (almost on the nose) VolgaCTF-2016 will begin. It will be a competition, as usual, in 2 stages: March 25-26 (this weekend!) Correspondence tour based on tasks and September 12-16 full-time. At the internal stage, the winners of the qualifying round will be invited: 5 teams from the Volga Federal District, 4 from other regions and 3 foreign teams. The list of tasks this year's classic tasks; The “legend” of the competition is the struggle for open-source in the face of artificial intelligence. More details can be found here:
2016.volgactf.ru/news , new details are added every day. This year we expect more than 500 participating teams, among which we are waiting for you, dear readers. Registration will be open even after the start of the competition, so if you heard about them on Saturday morning, you can still have time to take part.

Last year 604 teams competed, 14 passed to the final, including teams from Moscow State University, Penza, Saratov universities. Muscovites and took the top prize. The results can be viewed in the group VolgaCTF
vk.com/volgactf .
VolgaCTF was first organized in 2011 on the initiative of the Koibasta team, and was supported by the Information Technology and Communications Department of the Samara Region. Initially, the competition was only in-person (and, as a result, regional), only 8 teams fought among themselves. But next year the competition came to the existing format. On Habré published an article on the trail of VolgaCTF 2012 (
habrahabr.ru/post/142131 ). The author then participated in it as an ordinary member of one of the teams.

Some of my personal impressions: in JOY300 (in the article above, this is a task with a fountain / histogram, actually consisting of words), my mind caught on some typos in the standard SOPA text. I did not invent anything better than manually searching for these typos and writing down on a piece of paper. The question turned out in English, hinting at one of the Chinese pirate "queens". Her name was the flag.

Upcoming competitions are not the only ones in the organization of which our team takes an active part. We also help to organize the Russian Cybersecurity Competition - new computer security team competitions, which will be held on May 12, 2016 in the traditional CTF “flag capture” format. They will be held in the framework of the exhibition "Svyaz-2016". Invited teams from different universities and regions. Guests of the exhibition will be able to observe the course of the competition. Despite the fact that this year the participation is closed, it is planned to invite everyone to the following events.
To sum up: the VolgaCTF competition is about to begin, so go to the website (
2016.volgactf.ru ), register and participate. Remember: you can register at any time.
