I thought for a long time what the first post should be about in my blog.
Of course, about art! The art of programming :)
Every year, around the world, dozens of contests in computer art are held. Different participants exhibit their work in the following areas:
- Computer graphics. Everything is as usual here. Drawings drawn on the computer.
- Music written with the help of the music tracker software. Music that was listened to more than ten years ago using only computers. These music formats competed well with midi. Now they can probably be found only in these competitions - XM, S3M, IT.
- Electronic music, which was created by the means of our time. (mp3, ogg)
- And, what is the main focus of all these contests, where they originated - computer demos and intro.
What is a demo?
This is a computer program (usually under x86, but there are exceptions, for example, under AMIGA, Z80, etc.), which, with musical accompaniment, renders a real-time roll. What usually happens, especially with the technologies of our century, constantly striding forward, and professional programmers, is simply unimaginable.
There is a group of German developers RealStorm, which present the 2003 real
-time ray-trace engine to the general public. (That is why intel now makes the 8 core core of a larrabee :)). Learn more about their projects at
www.realstorm.com .
')
There are groups that make just a great video using video cards. One of my favorite bands is ASD, which, with my favorite composer leviathan, wrote
this masterpiece in 2005 . And one more of
their work , which leaves more questions;), rather than answers. Who is interested to get to know closer
www.asd.gr.I can not stop at the old demos. The Popsy Team group, which released the
VIP-2 demo in 2000 and the Sunflower, which made
Tesla .
Another couple of nice small demos from Synesthetics-
Instant Zen and
Electric Kool-Aid64k intro.
Having stayed a bit on the art of programming, it is impossible not to pay attention to the demos, which occupy 64kb. Can you imagine that such demos go a few minutes, sometimes hitting more than demos that occupy several megabytes?
Perhaps I'll start small. So say for warming up.
Demo 1Kb , which took 1st place in the icons 2008 demo.
If this is 1kb, then how much can you cram into
4Kb . :)
Meet 64kb intro -
Prophecy - Project Nemesis , 2004.
Another fun project :) -
Sumotori Dreams . A small toy. Try it, very fun.
Actually, for now everything :)
Any demos can be found at
scene.org , which is constantly up to date with the events of all the competitions held. It contains a huge database of demo programs.
And yet there is one resource -
demoscene.ru , which publishes many of the best demos.
If you have favorite demos, add them in the comments. I'll gladly have a look.
UPD: Try not to create new comments about those demos that are already discussed or discussed in the comments. There are already written about many demonstrators that I did not mention to habratopic.
