Video from JUG.ru meeting with Kotlin Andrei Breslav and Dmitry Zhemerov

A week ago, a meeting of JUG.ru with the developers of the Kotlin language, Andrei Breslav and Dmitry Zhemerov, took place in St. Petersburg. As you probably all know, Kotlin was released a couple of weeks ago, and now, after almost six years of development, it's time to talk about what happened.

On Friday evening, February 26, the people at the St. Petersburg office of Oracle were crowded with dofig, which made us and the speakers very happy.

The meeting consisted of four parts:

Andrei Breslav - Introduction. What is Kotlin?

The story of what Kotlin is, what ideas it contains and how these ideas have evolved over the past five years.

Dmitry Zhemerov - Kotlin: to the release and further

Starting from version 1.0, Kotlin provides guarantees of backward compatibility with existing code. Dmitry told that the Kotlin developers promise us with you for the future, how these promises influenced the design of the language, and about what directions of future development there are already blanks in version 1.0.

Andrei Breslav - Kotlin: the most difficult is compatibility

Andrei talked about how they and their colleagues fought for transparent compatibility with Java - so that Kotlin and Java could live together in the same project. To do this, we had to come up with quite a few original solutions and make many compromises at all levels: from the type system to plug-ins to build systems.

Kotlin Q & A session

It turned out cheerfully, it turned out fun, the people generally liked it. And you?
