Microsoft ordered to pay half a billion dollars for violating two patents

San Diego District Court ordered Microsoft to pay $ 511.6 million in compensation for damage caused by infringement of patents owned by Alcatel-Lucent. As it became known, Microsoft intends to file an appeal. The trial between the two companies has been going on for five years.

Earlier, the court decided that Microsoft violated two Alcatel patents. One of them describes the method of choosing a calendar date in the menu of some programs, including Microsoft Outlook and Windows Mobile, the other concerns the use of a pen in a tablet computer.

This week, Judge Marilyn L. Huff rejected Microsoft’s appeal and changed the amount of the payment in favor of Alcatel-Lucent. Now the amount includes interest for the period that passed before the court decision. The amount could be even greater, but the court did not find a patent infringement owned by Alcatel-Lucent and related to the video coding technology used by Microsoft.
