I think many people remember such a wonderful game like Total Annihilation? In addition, the continuation of Supreme Commander was recently released: someone liked it, some didn't. Do you know that there is also an open-source engine for RTS
Spring ? For which there are many mods that implement various "samizdat" strategies, but in addition there is the possibility to use the resources of Total Annihilation (hereinafter referred to as TA).
With minimal graphic settings, the game looks almost the same as usual TA, but you can allow free rotation of the camera. But at high settings and installing some mods, the game looks very nice:

What are the
possibilities in this engine?
- Traditionally, cross-platform and open code.
- Large-scale battles (up to 5000 units, if your computer is capable of this).
- Support for TA format units.
- Deformable landscape
- As they say, a more user-friendly interface, but I haven't figured it out yet.
- A huge number of players on-line, which can not but rejoice.
- Lua scripts for writing interfaces and as scripts for maps.
- Modular support for AI (AI) and as they say already existing AI understand better than in the usual TA. For example, AAI is initially stupid, but over time it gathers information about which units it is better to build, which units attack it, where it is attacked more often, and accordingly makes this decision.
- Auxiliary AI. For example, you can make it so that the workers themselves improve the resource-building buildings over time, or that the workers report that there is nothing to do, etc.
- The ability to control units from the first person.
- New, often more detailed maps.
- The ability to change the display mode of the map. For example, the mode in which the density of metal deposits is shown, or the mode showing the possibility of building buildings on the surface.

Installation is very simple, but still here is a brief description in Russian:
Windows | Linux |
---|
Required files: At the time of this writing, the following files were here : Installer version 0.76b1 Server if you want to play on the local network
If you want to play TA-based mods and you have a licensed copy of the game , then you may need the following file (sometimes it’s broken in the installer; () - base-ota-content.zip
We start the installer, choose the necessary modes, maps, etc., he downloads and installs everything himself. base-ota-content.zip unzip to the folder "installation location \ base"; self-downloaded mods - “installation location \ mods”; maps - “location_installation \ maps”;
| In some distributions, all the necessary files for Spring are in the repositories, if not, then we read it . Usually, files are received by adding a link to the list of repositories (or in an overlay), synchronization and installation.
Then you need to create folders in your home directory: mkdir ~ / .spring ~ / .spring / base ~ / .spring / maps ~ / .spring / mods Unzip base-ota-content.zip to ~ / .spring / base, copy mods and maps to corresponding folders

The mods themselves download the installer, but if it’s more convenient for you to download it yourself, here are some of them:
And now a brief overview of some mods:
Complete Annihilation is a mod in which models and textures are completely reworked. The gameplay is slightly different. Basically, they want to say that microcontrol is more useful in this mode, all units remain useful until the end of the game, and economics micromanagement is less important.
Balanced Annihilation - as for me it doesn’t practically differ from TA. Changes at least mostly purely balanced. Screenshots can be viewed
here .
XTA - a little changed models and textures, a modified tree of development.
Not OTA - mod focused on realism. Changed the proportions of units; ships - can be a stronghold of attack; airplanes have limited fuel; Players start with a ready base, and you can build either only within the base, or only defenses - i.e. important points of the map will have to be controlled by mobile troops (building new bases is too expensive and too long); Upgrading to second-level units is very expensive; different types of weapons inflict damage on different units in different ways, boats are more sensitive to weapons operating on the area.
Kernel Panic - by name it is easy to understand that players are waiting for the game inside the computer. No economy, units and factories are free, but plants can only be built in certain places.
Commander Shooter - FPS, where players choose one of the types of commander and try to kill each other
StarWars TA - you can not comment. Screenshots can be viewed by reference.
