Looking for the perfect OS ...

We are all looking for the ideal in any area of our life. We persistently seek, often unwilling to admit the futility of our attempts ... After all, the ideal does not exist! This is an axiom. I'm also looking for my ideal — the best operating system. And I hope that someday I will find ...

It all started about 5 years ago, when the LiveCD Knoppix came into my hands. Then I realized that there is an alternative to the omnipresent Windows and DOS (in our school it still stood on many machines). And I started an intensive search ... I downloaded what I could (at that time by dialup), wandered through software shops, asked my friends, asked to record and send by mail, ordered free distributions with mailing, etc. And then I just wondered how it all works, I tried not only new, but also very old OS. I followed their development, dug from the inside, tried to catch relationships and general principles. I studied architecture, internal structure, solved problems that arose ... And again I searched, searched, searched!

I do not even know what requirements I made when choosing an OS. It's just that it should be convenient to work in (and it's not even in the GUI — it's not necessary at all) and it should be possible to get deep into the insides of the OS in order to tune it as you like. And something else ... I do not even know what exactly. The OS is supposed to be easy ...

In the meantime, I decided to compile a list of operating systems (of which the truth is most of them are Linux distributions, etc.), with which I have already become more or less closely acquainted. It turned out about a hundred points;)

So far, the greatest preference of OS from different areas I give Debian GNU / Linux and Ubuntu (I generally like many debian-based distros), Windows 2003 Server, eyeOS, QNX, Minix3, Inferno, BeOS and SkyOS.

For those interested, I suggest to get acquainted with the full list .

PS: I also like MacOS, but I don’t have the money for Apple products yet, but somehow I don’t work with Hackintosh :(
ZZY: all of the above is nothing more than thinking out loud, so in kamentah please do not holivarit!
