Wippies: Hippies going wireless

Quite by chance I came across an article in the newspaper about the Wippies project and it interested me. The idea of the project in one line: ubiquitous free access to the Internet via Wi-Fi. This is implemented through shared access. The router creates 3 access points (wireless access point). The owner of the router gets access through the main password-protected AP (wep, wpa). And people who are nearby, such as guests, neighbors, or just passers-by, access the Internet via a second AP, which remains without a password. The third AP is for VoIP. Those. the point is very simple: letting people use the Internet and get access themselves when needed. But such a need often arises when you are away from home? And of course, all this makes sense only with widespread.

And now attention. Wippies is currently in testing and distributes routers absolutely free!

There is a minor disclaimer. If during the first year of use your router is turned off for two weeks, then you will be billed for the amount of the router cost - 30 or 80 euros, depending on the model. In cases of forced outages for a longer period, you can always humanly agree.

On Habré, a topic about opening Wi-Fi access points was raised several months ago. The following problems emerged: 1) “guests” start to download something and clog your channel 2) illegal things can happen from your access point, for example, frauds with credit cards.
In the case of Wippies, these problems are solved. 1) Traffic priority is given to the main AP. That is, you will always use your channel to the maximum. Guests remain unused channel bandwidth. 2) the guest traffic is tunneling through the Wippies server (here I’m not quite sure that nothing threatens you with outsiders from your AP, but still)
')
And so, all you need is a valid ADSL connection. There are 2 options:
1. Wippies WifiBox
- WLAN 54Mbps (802.11a / b / g)
- 4 x Ethernet LAN port
- 1 x Ethernet WAN port

2. Wippies HomeBox
- ADSL2 / 2 + modem, up to 24 Mbit / s
- secure WLAN connection for home or office
- VoIP support
- firewall
- ADSL
- 4 x Ethernet ports
- 2 x USB
- 2 x VoIP
- WLAN on 3 SSID'a (main, VoIP, guest)
- In the future, they promise to implement support for managing the “smart home”, webcams, video-on-demand.

The load optionally offers services: mailbox, network drive (500 MB for free, 50 GB 5 euros per month, data backup, blogs and information search).

In Tallinn, where I live, judging by the coverage map , there are already more than 200 Wippies access points. The total number of routers sent out is more than 21,000.

I have already ordered myself and friends. And now a little about sad things. Wippies so far sends routers to 5 countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Spain and Sweden. One device is sent to one address (you can also send one more, for example, to order a work address, a grandmother or a girlfriend). I live, I remind you, in Estonia and when registering I was asked for a personal code (an individual for each citizen of the Republic of Estonia), which is then also verified through authorization in the Internet bank.

And I will add that I sincerely hope that the whole thing will soon reach Russia. Or maybe there are people who will be able to implement the idea of ubiquitous wireless Internet on their own.
