Oracle Stops Java Browser Plugin

By the end of 2015, the developers of leading browsers either removed the support for embedded plug-ins, or announced such plans. For example, Mozilla is going to abandon support for NPAPI plugins, because most of their functions are now available through standard WebAPI . Chrome has been blocking NPAPI plugins since last April. Edge Browser doesn't support plugins either. Thus, in all leading browsers there will soon be no built-in support for Flash, Silverlight, Java, etc.

In this regard, Oracle has announced that, starting with JDK 9, it will stop releasing the Java browser plugin. It will be removed from the Oracle JDK and JRE in a future release of Java SE.

It is quite logical: if the plugin is not supported by browsers, then why develop it?

Web developers are advised to turn to alternative solutions, to abandon working with Java applets, for example, in favor of Java Web Start technology , which does not need plugins. Migration options are described in more detail in the reference manual (pdf) .

For many years, the Java plugin has been one of the main ways of installing malware on users' computers. Soon this method will cease to be relevant.

The release of JDK 9 was originally scheduled for September 22, 2016, but then it was moved to March 23, 2017 .
