Mozilla servers barely coped with the record

Mozilla servers predictably did not cope with the load that hit them in Download Day. Although the official start of the mass download of Firefox 3 was scheduled for 13.00 US time (21:00 Moscow time), but the American website Mozilla.com began to slow down in the morning. After the start of the action, the site was unavailable for an hour. For this reason, the increased load immediately fell on Mozilla.org and other Mozilla sites, so the brakes started almost everywhere. One of the most persistent was the European website www.mozilla-europe.org , which resumed normal operation within 15 minutes after the first failure, that is, at 13:15.

At 14:00 (22:00 Moscow time), representatives of the Mozilla organization made an official statement and said that they were actively working to resolve the problem. And the truth is: by 15:00 the site’s work was established. Developers in the blog reported that the servers simply could not withstand the load of 14,000 downloads per minute (13 Gbit / s).



However, nothing prevents Firefox 3 from entering the Guinness Book of Records. Whatever the official number of downloads for the first day may be (and because of problems with the servers, it will actually be lower than it could be), but the “Fire Fox” will still record the record at its own expense. Just because it is the first achievement in the new category.
