Yandex buys traffic jams specialists

Yandex announced the purchase of SMIlink , an information agency that collects, processes and provides information about traffic jams on Russian roads. The amount of the transaction was not disclosed. Experts estimate the cost of the agency at $ 10-15 million.

Yandex has been cooperating with this company for a long time. When kukutz three months ago announced the opening of the project Yandex.Probki 2.0 (that announcement became one of the most popular articles on Habré for the week), he said bluntly that the information is taken from the database "SMYlinkinka"

After the completion of the purchase, SMIlink will become a subsidiary of Yandex LLC and at the same time retain its structure, staff (about 70 people) and the previous management. Pavel Goldin, who headed the agency since 2005, will continue to lead the company.

The SMIlink project was opened in 2001 by the VessOlink group of companies. The information agency cooperates with operators of navigation systems based on GPS positioning, including mapping providers NAVTEQ and TeleAtlas. SMIlink provides information on the road situation to many radio stations, as well as to subscribers of mobile operators MTS, VimpelCom, MegaFon and SkyLink. As for Internet partners, the agency also works with Mail.ru.
')
SMIlink receives information about traffic jams from the Moscow traffic police, automatic detectors of vehicles, and also uses data from the mobile unit and call center for motorists. Information processing is carried out by its own special service.

Yandex has other partners in the Yandex.Probki project: the Probki.net project provides information about traffic jams in St. Petersburg, and the Druha Smuha news agency in Kiev. There is no such service in Belarus.
