Firefox will support non-standard CSS for compatibility with WebKit

The developers of the Firefox browser have announced the inclusion of support for the WebKit engine-specific CSS elements. Support for these elements will appear in the engine Gecko, which is the basis of the browser Firefox. As for the first versions, with the inclusion of CSS, they will be released in April and May - this is version 46 and 47, respectively. According to representatives of the Firefox team, we are talking about new features with the prefix "-webkit-".

Developers have been thinking about adding support for non-standard CSS elements for quite some time. The reason is that browser users have begun to actively use extensions that add support for named CSS elements in mobile applications. The extensions themselves are unofficial, but they could become quite popular, since the main browsers for mobile devices are based on engines such as WebKit and Blink / Chromium.

Specific prefixes for standards are a tool that allows browser creators and developers to continue working with new standards. Prefixes help not to wait for the completion of the standardization process, but to continue the work.

However, few developers remove prefixes after completing CSS. According to Mozilla developer Daniel Holbert, now a fairly significant segment of the Web (in particular, the mobile Internet) depends on the -webkit prefix with respect to CSS properties and capabilities. For this reason, Firefox will also support prefixes soon.

A list of proposed prefixes, support for which will be added to the browser, can be viewed here . In addition, the Firefox developers have created the WebExtensions API , which will allow Firewall to support extensions for Chrome, probably the changes will not be necessary in this case.
