You can not use tools

Recently, I took a small hack to improve the site of a non-commercial animal shelter located in our city. The existing one was made on the old version of Microsoft FrontPage, so all my actions with it were, by definition, an improvement.

For 20 minutes, I made a simple design in HTML, and then spent several hours editing it, reworking and improving it. So I reduced the 25-page site to an 8-page site, which has become friendlier.

Then I immediately wanted to use some newfangled tool. Static site generator, CMS, Sass, grids, some more fancy stuff ...
')
Then I critically looked at these tools. Static site generator requires knowledge of markup, commands and settings. CMS must be configured, set logins, roll patches for security, templates and support. Even for ready-made CMS on the hosting you need to spend time and effort, despite the fact that the content will be captured inside someone else's system.

These are tools made by geeks for geeks. Why 8-page CMS? Why bother with Sass at all? Good old CSS will do just fine.

Who knows who will get the task of reworking the site in the future. At some point, someone else will do it instead of me. And it will be easier to do this with eight simple HTML pages in hand, than with some own installed WordPress, which has already missed many updates. And so what with the need to repeat the navigation markup 8 times? Happened, repeated and more often.

To date, a simple bunch of HTML / CSS out of fashion. But why? Because existing tools are much better, or because we have overly complicated initially simple things?

We are builders, and we like tools and technologies, because they are new and interesting, and we enjoy their development. But if you think about the people for whom we make websites, the reality is quite the opposite. Usually they need simple designs, clear text, fewer technological refinements and abstractions. They need someone to take homeless animals for themselves - they do not need to mess around with all the gadgets of the site.

Remember those times when the web was very simple? He is still capable of this, and our task is to make him so.
