IBM cloud service translates applications into 9 languages

This week IBM introduced a beta version of the Globalization Pipeline service that translates applications into nine languages. The new IBM service is now available on Bluemix and is designed to support developers (both individuals and companies) when they enter the international market. Thanks to Globalization Pipeline, translating an application does not require re-assembling program code or redeploying an application to a directory after a translation is released.

In addition to English, beta languages are available in languages such as French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean. Back in 2014, a study conducted by Common Sense Advisory showed that about 75% of residents of non-English-speaking countries prefer to buy applications in their own language. The survey was conducted among 3,000 people from around the world, including countries in Europe, Asia and South America. The bottom line was that 60% never or very rarely bought applications on English-language sites.

That is why entering the international market requires special attention to those customers who prefer localized applications.

“Globalization Pipeline supports both corporations whose applications often also need to be localized for the convenience of their own employees, as well as private developers who have never translated their applications into other languages, but want to try it without large monetary investments,” Lisa McCabe commented on the situation. , Head of Global Foundations Technology.

The key features of the new service are machine translation with the possibility of further text editing, which allows to improve the quality of the material, support various source file formats, and the availability of a number of open-source SDKs.

The service also supports plug-ins to IBM Delivery Pipeline and IBM UrbanCode Deploy.

Automating the translation of any texts that the user sees in the application of the Globalization Pipeline service allows the development teams to focus on key activities, avoiding dispersion of efforts and working on the resource-intensive tasks of manually localizing their applications.
