Configuring framebuffer in Ubuntu 8.04, playing movies in mplayer

For some time he began to notice for himself the craving for the console. Not to the terminal emulator - Tilda plays this role for me - but to the real console itself. The reason ... probably the most important was the desire to extend the life of a laptop battery - in fact, not so much is often required. And the topic of the course work simply requires you to be with the console - after all, I'm learning to work with embedded-Linux on the Atmel NGW100.

I decided to embellish a little life in it. I found several tutorials for setting up a framebuffer in Ubuntu (mostly Gutsy, but for Hardy it’s perfect.) At least one of them: leolik.blogspot.com/2008/02/framebuffer-ubuntu-710.html What is this framebuffer will not tell - there is no need to produce extra information.

On my Acer Aspire 5600 (Ati X1300, 1280 * 800) everything went fine, except for the fact that it was not possible to set 1280 * 800 (for this you need to suffer a little with the installation and configuration of uvesafb), but 800 * 600 - larger font.

Work in the console has become more pleasant. Only one thing was missing: I could not understand why my mplayer displays movies in one and a half screens in width (i.e. completely + half), and also in B / W mode.

The solution turned out to be simple: it was just necessary to set 16 instead of 24 bits. Apparently, either the driver or the screen is no longer held.

I am pleased. The set of favorite programs is still poor: vim, mplayer, climm. But I think it will be replenished. At the console one more pleasant feature was found: eyes are less tired.
