Moore's Law and Storage Technology

Previously, we considered Moore's law in relation to competition between Intel and IBM. Today we decided to pay attention to the area of data storage and analyzed the Wired note .

According to Moore's law, we should observe a decrease in the size and cost of transistors, but analysts and experts say that there is a risk of slowing down the pace of development. Today, technologies are on the verge of a new stage of development, but for its full-fledged launch, it is necessary to revise existing production processes at a fundamental level. This process is possible and it will occur, but at great expense, which in turn may well affect the final cost of production.

Various experts are constantly trying to apply Moore's law to new areas of activity. For example, most recently we are talking about its applicability for IaaS-providers. Here were carried out the relevant assessments and studies that showed partial compliance with the actual pricing. In this case, it is impossible to talk about full compliance due to the presence of a number of independent factors determining the pricing policy of providers.

Anyway, Moore's law continues to serve as a beacon of sorts by which it is possible to track and compare the achievements of competing companies. Data storage is no exception. Here, a revolution in the field of flash memory is in full swing - there are developments like 3D NAND and 3D Xpoint, which Samsung and Intel are working on with Micron, respectively.

PS We try to share not only our own experience in the service of providing virtual infrastructure 1cloud , but also to talk about various research and news in related fields of knowledge.
