Emoji - the word of 2015

On-line translator Oxford Dictionaries proclaimed the word of 2015 is not a word at all, but one of emoji, known on the Internet as “a person with tears of joy”. Last year, the word "vape" (electronic cigarette) won, and a year before it - the favorite "selfie". The tradition of choosing the word of the year continues from 2004, but the picture has never been given such honor.

Emojis (from Japanese - pictures, symbols) are small digital images, icons on the keyboard of a phone or tablet. They are used to electronically express an idea or a specific emotion. The term emoji itself is borrowed from the Japanese and comes from the combination of the words “picture”, “character” + moji. The similarity with the English smile is random. Smileys are also facial expressions, but consisting of a set of characters, such as ";)", ":)," etc.

For the first time in the history of Oxford Niction nominations, the pictogram was crowned for the word of the year. All this thanks to the unprecedented popularity of this emoji in social media. According to most users, it is the above mentioned yellow “face”, literally shedding tears of laughter, best of all reflects the mood and conveys emotions.

This emoji has been added to the list of other slang nominees. Such as, for example, “lumbersexual" (English lumbersexual). This term means deliberately careless and rude style of retro clothing: T-shirts, flannel shirts, knitted sweaters, vests and hats with fur. mustache and long hair. At the same time, clothes and hair should always be clean and well groomed. The image can be complemented with a bow tie.

The nomination “Words of the Year” raised the status of emojis, which have long been not the prerogative of adolescents. The characters took the form of a visual expression that goes beyond the language and expands the possibilities of communication. Emoji can mean many different words at the same time. Pictures where more eloquently reflect the essence, in addition to the definition, also give an emotional color to the thought. Emoji is a popular and universal form of communication, which is equated with words.

The choice of “faces with tears of joy” is really not random. Oxford Dictionaries together with SwiftKey, using leading mobile technologies, conducted a series of studies. The results made it possible to determine the frequency of using statistics for some of the emojis of the most popular characters in the world. As it turned out, in 2014, the emoji “face with tears of joy” was used most often. If you look at the percentage, in the UK up to 20%, and in the United States up to 17%.

In a statement, Oxford Dictionaries President Casper Gthrazol (Casper Grathwohl) wrote:

You can see how the traditional fonts of the alphabet are trying to match the rapid development of communications of the 21st century. It is therefore not surprising that emoji typefaces satisfy these requirements.
