Key Account: How Yahoo Hopes to End Passwords

We all know about the need to create strong passwords that almost every service we use requires, but at the same time there are certain inconveniences: such passwords are very easy to forget, and if we do not change them periodically, then cyber criminals could sooner or later hack

By the way, some people believe that traditional text passwords are still needed, while others think that the future of passwords lies in the hands of emoticons and selfies.

Meanwhile, Yahoo offered to end passwords altogether, by running Key Account. According to company representatives , the release of this system was dictated by the need to simplify user logon procedures. In fact, using the Key Account now it has become as easy as clicking a button.

This service is already available for Yahoo Mail and it allows the user to access the account through his smartphone. All you need to do is to click on the button in the Key Account and receive a notification on your smartphone.

It will serve as a check for logging into your mail account, since will show whether the access attempt is legitimate or, on the other hand, is suspicious, as a result of which we can assume that someone is trying to access the account.

“This is safer than a traditional password, because once the Key Account is activated, even if someone takes possession of the account information, only the user will be able to access it,” explains a company representative. Thus, the screen of your smartphone turns itself into a password, and you have the opportunity to block unauthorized access to your account.

After the smartphone and Key Account are connected, there is only one problem - if your device is stolen. In this case, Yahoo has installed a system that will allow you to verify your identity via e-mail or via SMS, which are sent to an alternative number.

At the moment, this new access method is only available for the Yahoo mail platform (from which you can access Outlook, Hotmail and AOL). It is hoped that by the end of the year, the Key Account can be used on other services, such as Tumblr.

This is the second attempt the company has made in order to get rid of passwords. In March, they created a “low demand” system and temporary passwords that users do not need to remember: all they had to do was request a password from Yahoo and receive it on their phone via SMS. However, it seems that the company decided to bet on a system that is more secure than a text message.

It seems that traditional passwords are becoming obsolete. If we are lucky, they will not have long to live, after which we will be able to forget about them forever, without prejudice to our security.
