Google ordered smartphone makers to encrypt data on Android 6 devices by default

Six months ago, we wrote that Google decided to postpone its data-encryption initiative ( full-disk encryption ) on devices with Android 5 (Lollipop), after its announcement in 2014. Then, the initiative of the mobile OS manufacturer was for device manufacturers. On branded Google Nexus 5 devices with Android Lollipop, encryption was also disabled by default.

With the release of Android 6 (Marshmallow), the situation has changed, as reported by Ars Technica, Google has changed the requirements for encryption in its main document, Android Compatibility Definition Document. Now in the specification clause responsible for encryption, the company regulates the encryption of data on the device with Android 6 by default, but with some exceptions for a certain type of device that cannot provide the proper level of cryptographic performance.

If you are using the device, it will support you for your device. If you are a permanent, non-removable part of the device.

To enable encryption by default, the device must maintain the proper level of performance for this operation, so as not to burden the user with significant time costs when performing file operations. In addition, devices that have been updated on Android 6 from the outdated version of Android 5 and that encryption has been disabled by default on them are also exempt from including this feature by default after the update.

Encryption of user data is supported by default on Apple devices running iOS 8+. Such functions in mobile operating systems began to be introduced after published disclosures by a runaway NSA employee Edward Snowden, who revealed information about the mass surveillance of users by the special services.
