Graphic spam in 2006 "escalated"

70–80% of Runet’s mail traffic consists of spam, Kaspersky Lab reports, summarizing the past year. If by January 5, 2006 the share of spam was 55% of all mail, then by December 31, 2006 it was about 80%. Anna Vlasova, the head of the group of spam analysts, shared these data, RIA Novosti reports.

According to her, graphic spam became the “technological” leader in the reporting period. Estimation of its volume - 50% of the entire spam stream - is impressive, since in the summer of 2006 this type of garbage in traffic of large companies did not exceed 10-20%, without causing serious problems. Recall graphic spam is particularly unpleasant because it weighs more than three times the text.

Among other negative trends, active distribution of spam through mobile phones, in particular, through paid SMS services, is noted. In addition, the criminalization of spam continues, the share of which increased to 16-30% from the figures of 15-18% in 2005. Spam "outlaw" can manifest itself, for example, in an offer to buy answers to questions for the Unified School State Exam, explained Anna Vlasova. The expert predicts that the criminalization of spam will increase - “both in terms of the adaptation of English-language spam mailings to Russian reality, and in terms of the emergence of types of computer fraud specific to Runet”.

By the way, foreign spam prevails in the runetchik mail. The share of domestic garbage is slightly more than 20% - the rest is “ponaehalo” from abroad. For example, supplies of spam from the USA amounted to 20%, from China - 11%, Brazil and Germany are littering by 2%, Italy and Poland - by 4%, France - by 3%, Korea - by 5%.

Thematic spam diversity is only growing. Most often, as before, comes advertising "Viagra" and other medicines, a large proportion of educational spam - offers to attend various trainings and seminars. Among the new topics - legal and auditing services, real estate, printing. As a novelty in the delivery of spam, disguise as a personal letter is noted.

The forecasts for the current year are marked with the words “spam will not disappear anywhere and it will not become significantly less.” At the same time, the appearance of fundamentally new spam technologies is unlikely, Anna Vlasova noted. However, according to her, spammers can turn to technologies abandoned several years ago.
