IBM launches SolidDB under its brand

Trying to catch up with other DBMS developers, IBM announced the release of IBM SolidDB - a relational database that is fully stored in the server’s RAM (the so-called “embedded” DBMS; in-memory relational database). By storing information in fast memory and 64-bit addressing, such a system is an order of magnitude faster than a standard relational DBMS. This development can be used as a cache in IBM DB2 or Informix Dynamic Server servers. Alternatively, you can use it as a separate solution.

Relational embedded DBMS used to have a very limited scope, but IBM is going to significantly expand it at the expense of customers, including those from the financial sector.

IBM solidDB is a product of the Finnish company Solid Information Technology , which IBM bought six months ago. This purchase is a response to a similar action of the main competitor in the database market, Oracle, which acquired TimesTen three years ago. The answer is clearly delayed, because in addition to Orale / TimesTen, embedded databases and other companies are present on the market now.

Before joining IBM, a Finnish company developed SolidDB on its own. This DBMS can work practically under any OS, including any versions of Linux, HP / UX, AIX and Solaris.
