In early September, we, JetBrains,
announced the transition to a subscription licensing scheme.
The ad caused a
wave of protests very controversial reaction in blogs, twitter, facebook, reddit, as well as
here on Habré .
It took about two weeks to realize our main mistakes, calculate possible options for action, talk with outside users, argue themselves hoarse with each other and come to a decision that we are announcing today.

In short, with today's changes, the new licensing model, which will come into force on November 2, looks like this:
- It will be a hybrid model , based in essence on subscriptions, but having elements of perpetual licensing.
- The concept of a perpetual fallback license is introduced. This perpetual license relies on anyone who paid for the subscription year (in one payment or payments for 12 consecutive months), and covers the version available at the beginning of the last paid 12-month period. Roughly speaking, earlier you could use the version available at the end of the paid free updates period for an unlimited term, and now at the beginning of this period. This eliminates the situation in which the tool stops working, if a further subscription is not paid: you always have a version to which you can roll back and which you can use for as long as you wish.
- Since in the light of the above, the transition from the old licensing system to a new one, to put it mildly, is unprofitable, we introduce special conditions for the transition for customers with current or recently expired upgrade subscriptions. For such existing customers, the first two years of subscription are offered at the price of one .
- For all customers, a progressive discount system is introduced, reaching 40% after two years of continuous subscription .
- JetBrains Account remains the main tool for managing licenses, but now you can use license keys for offline work . This is less convenient, but can sometimes be appropriate.
