Share Linux on PC - 2.5%?

According to the Gartner Dataquest survey, the following operating systems were installed on personal computers worldwide in 2006: Windows XP - 74.3%, other versions of Windows - 21.6%, Mac OS - 1.6%, Linux - 2.5% .
Here we can read about it.

At first glance, the news is joyful. Serious companies say that the share of GNU / Linux exceeded the share of MacOSX, which is a clear progress and clearly what many Linux users expected.

There is one small “but” ...

This is a “but” in the representativeness of the sample for which it is concluded that the share is occupied. And that's why:
Not so long ago, I and a group of my friends conducted a similar study among 150 Russians, about half of whom are familiar with each other, that is, among our friends. It should be noted that among those surveyed by us were both people working in the IT-sphere, and not working in it, as employees of small and large firms, and government employees.
')
And our numbers are strikingly different, despite the fact that in Russia the share of GNU / Linux is in principle lower than in developed countries, we have the following alignment:

GNU / Linux - 75%
M $ Windows - 50%
* BSD (including MacOSX) - 10%

The numbers are rounded by me, so as not to irritate the eyes reading fractions. And so, what is the main difference, the main difference is that we obviously get more than 100%, and this is understandable, because many people have more than one OS, but several, many who use GNU / Linux to work and surf the net. keep M $ Windows for games, as well as those who use to work and surf * BSD often keep Windows for games.

That is, in fact, any study on the percentage occupied by different OS on desktops should have a total of more than 100, for the reason I indicated.

That is why I am not in a hurry to rejoice in the research that I saw today. Although in any case, the numbers are already interesting.

PS Necessary note: MacOSX is related to * BSD due to the use of BSD binding and unwillingness to separate the OS on the Mach kernel into a separate group (although, in addition to MacOSX, we saw both Hurd and OpenDarwin in the process of researching our friends)
