IBM will help Singapore to solve the problem of increasing sea traffic

IBM Corporation and the Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, MPA) announced a partnership project, the purpose of which is to develop analytical tools to solve the problem of increasing the number of seagoing vessels in Singapore and managing these vessels.

Currently, Singapore is one of the busiest port cities in the world, with thousands of ships in the port at any time of the day. The annual number of ships that call at the port of Singapore is 130 thousand. This means that every 2-3 minutes one ship enters or leaves the port.

IBM has signed a partnership agreement, which is valid for two years. During this time, the corporation will create a unified platform for collecting real-time data and ensuring a continuous overview of the base points of the port of Singapore. This will allow operators to make decisions based on correct real-time data. For example, this platform will be able to provide operators with information on the location of ships, weather, and also provide information of a different kind. This will help to avoid emergency situations and to achieve permanent uninterrupted movement of vessels in and out of the port.

The new service is already partially ready for work, it is based on the IBM Traffic Prediction Tool . Experts expect that the predictive analysis that the platform can perform will ensure that port operators receive information on both the estimated time of arrival of ships at the port and the real time of arrival / departure. The partnership also envisages the development of three new methods for monitoring sea traffic in order to detect the unusual behavior of ships and prevent the illegal loading of goods. These methods include anomaly detection and data mining, and powerful data tools such as the IBM Incident Detection Module and the IBM System G will be used to analyze the data.

“We are pleased to cooperate with IBM in this important memorandum of understanding, involving the use of new technologies and data analytics mechanisms that will not only improve maritime operations, but also support our initiatives in the field of creating a new generation of smart port,” said MPA head Andrew Tan

IBM technologies will also be used to improve the performance of the newly established Security Council of the Port of Singapore.
