Web panels, extension buttons and other new items in Vivaldi 1.0.249.12 assembly

Hello!

It took quite a lot of time since the release of the previous weekly assembly, and this time we did not spend in vain. In the new assembly, we present a novelty - a web panel, and also added support for more extensions, fixed a lot of bugs, improved the animation of the interface, and worked well to improve performance. Now about all this in order and in more detail.

Web panels

In today's assembly, we present a web panel - a new feature that allows you to track updates from many websites or social networks while working with other pages.

To add a new web panel, click on '+' and enter the URL. After adding a web panel, its icon will appear in the sidebar, under the browser’s built-in panels. Clicking on this icon will open the corresponding page right inside the sidebar.

Due to the limited size of the sidebar, the content will be displayed in the mobile mode. Here are a few websites with which you can try the new feature:

This is only the initial implementation of a new function, which only allows you to try out how it can work. In the future, we will improve the performance of web panels, including opening links in a browser window and automatic updating of content. At the moment, you can update the content of the web panels through the right-click context menu when clicking on the web panel icon.

Extension Buttons

We plan to provide users in the browser with all the popular features "out of the box", but we understand that it is impossible to take into account the tastes of all users. Therefore, we have embedded extensions support in the Vivaldi browser. The basic support has already been implemented before; in the new build, we have added support for extension buttons that are placed directly in the browser interface. In this way, the number of extensions supported by Vivaldi has expanded, and you have also gained more opportunities to work with extensions.

Extensions that interact with open pages will display an icon in the address bar, and extensions that interact with the browser will display icons on the address bar.

Details in the address bar

We have long promised to make loading pages more informative, and now we keep our promise. Information on loading pages is now placed directly in the address bar.

Performance: Tabs and Bookmarks

In today's build, we rewrote some internal modules in order to improve performance. Now Vivaldi should handle opening and closing tabs faster, as well as switching between them. Also, the bookmark tree should now work much faster. Also, we have laid a few backlog in the code for the future - you can see the acceleration of browser functions in future builds.

Other improvements

In addition to the above changes, which are visible, we have made many changes that are not visible. These changes affected the bookmarks and notes panel. We also updated the browser core to version Chromium 45.0.2454.43. You can see the full list of changes below.
