The winner of the next frequency auction in the USA will be obliged to create a free Wi-Fi-Internet access service of national scale. Such a rule
can be adopted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) at a special meeting on June 12. The idea of “browsing” in such a way up to 95% of the country's population was expressed a year ago, but at that time did not meet with adequate support.
A proposal to allocate frequencies for such a serious project has already been received by the Commission from M2Z Networks, founded by former key FCC officials. The state, under the terms of this transaction, was to receive 5% of the advertising revenue of the deployed wireless network. The proposal, however, was rejected because of the rules requiring the allocation of frequencies only through the mechanism of auctions. The more interesting it will be to observe the outcome of the “
battle of the titans ” in August, because business sharks are already licking themselves in anticipation.
Frequency auctions are one of the most important events in the US telecommunications industry. We have already
written about the last such event. The volumes of money involved and the intensity of the politicians attracted the attention of the public far beyond the professional communications community. Such auctions largely determine the direction of development of not only the communications market in America, but also closely related markets in Europe and Asia.
