Previously, I published the first part, which described general information about RAID controllers (you should
read the basics here ), there were questions and interest, I am posting a “meat” piece. Everything is very specific here - a detailed classification of Adaptec controllers, the functions of each series of controllers, tables, pictures, etc.

Classification Adaptec controllers.
You can try to present the enhancement of stack functions relative to the class of projects in this table graphically in order to give the table visibility.
Table of application models in terms of support for SSD drives.
The next generation of RAID controllers and HBAs will provide even more powerful support for using a large number of SSDs on the controller. The number of disks indicated in the table has an approximate value. More accurate calculations of performance in this article are not specified, they can be performed by companies - integrators.

The dependence of the choice of the RAID controller model on the number of users of the server system is given in the table below (the active users are indicated). The numbers are rather approximate, and are given in order to understand the trend in the use of certain models.
And one more important point. As all textbooks on the design of complex systems strongly recommend, the project should take into account not only the present, but future system requirements.
There is a dependence on applications. For example, SSD caching speeds up reading-oriented applications. Fortunately, this is more than 90% of Internet applications. Caching is also possible for write operations, but this is more like a “nice addition” to reading due to the nature of the applications themselves.
We now consider the controller models in more detail.
6th Adaptec RAID Controller Series.
General characteristics of the controller of the 6th series:
• Based on RoC chip (RAID on Chip) PM8013 8x SAS2 ports (6Gb / s) PMC-Sierra (for more information, see
www.pmcs.com;
• Models with the maximum number of ports - 8 SAS 2.0 ports (6Gb / s), and an 8x PCI-express Gen 2.0 slot;
• Cache memory - 512MB DDR2-667 DRAM.
• Optionally can use the Adaptec Flash Module Cache Protection Kit (AFM-600 Kit) which includes:
o Daughter board with flash-memory;
o Remote supercapacitor unit.
Adaptec RAID 6805 with AFM-600 Flash Module.
Controllers 6 series at the stack level support:
Simple Volume, JBOD, RAID 0, 1, 10, 1E, 5, 6, 50, 60 Hybrid RAID 1, 10.
The maximum performance of the controller core is 50,000 IOPS (4 KB blocks, random read).
Performance for sequential patterns in the table below.
6T family.
The main purpose of the appearance of such 6T family of controllers is to eliminate situations where the inflexible part of the cable (part about 2 cm long after the connector) rests on the lid or case of the server, on the processor heatsink or other parts of the server. To do this, on the 6th series of controllers, the ports are arranged so that the inflexible part of the cable does not extend beyond the geometric bounds of the controller. Marked with a green arrow in the picture. The blue rectangle is the inflexible part of the cable.

Family 6E
RAID controllers for entry-level projects. Reduced RAM, compared with conventional 6th series controllers, simplified stack, no support for cache protection and expanders. They have a simplified stack, support only Simple Volume, JBOD, RAID 0.1, 10, 1E, that is, there is no support for RAID 5.5EE, 6, 50, 60, but support Hybrid RAID 1, 10 (see the “ Hybrid Volumes ”in the chapter“ Basic Functions of RAID Controllers ”below.
Model 6405E supports a maximum of 4 disks. Model 6805E - 8 disks (as there is no support for SAS expanders). Model 6405E has a PCI-E 1x slot, model 6805E has a PCI-E 4x ver. Slot. 2
Port connectors for 6th series controllers.
The entire family of RAID controllers of the 6th series supports only Mini-SAS ports.
For internal ports use connector - SFF 8087 (internal mini-SAS),
for external - SFF-8088 (external mini-SAS).

Adaptec 7th RAID Series Controllers.
Adaptec RAID 71605.
The first PCIe 3.0 LP MD2 controller with 16 SAS / SATA 6 Gb / s ports.
The first PCIe 3.0 half-length controller with 24 ports.
The first solution takes full advantage of the PCIe 3.0 bus.
The first solution, providing 450 thousand IOPS and 6600 MB / s.
The first solution is focused on the creation of volumes based on SSD.
For the first time, the connection of external RBOD racks, tape devices and autoloaders is fully permitted.
General characteristics of the controller of the 7th series:
• Based on the SRCv RoC chip (RAID on Chip) PM8015 SRCv 24x port SAS2 (6Gb / s) PMC-Sierra (for more information, visit
www.pmcs.com );
• Models with the maximum number of ports - 24 SAS 2.0 ports (6Gb / s), and an 8x PCI-express Gen 3.0 slot;
• Cache memory - 1024 MB DDR3-1333 DRAM.
o Optionally, use the Adaptec Flash Module Cache Security Kit (AFM-700), which includes:
o Daughter board with flash-memory;
o Remote supercapacitor unit.
The 7th series controllers at the stack level support: Simple Volume, JBOD, RAID 0, 1, 10, 1E, 5, 6, 50, 60, Hybrid RAID 1, 10, and HBA mode.
Starting with the 7th series, RAID controllers support HBA mode, i.e. in fact, it’s not really a RAID controller, it’s a RAID controller and HBA on one board. See the description of the functions of the products section "HBA mode".
RAID 5EE support is discontinued (the reason is that the performance of RAID6 due to the strengthening of the architecture of the RoC chip equaled the RAID5EE, and for all other parameters - reliability, ease of maintenance, etc., RAID 6 or similar or better RAID5EE, which deprives the meaning of the existence of RAID 5EE in the stack of a modern RAID controller).
The maximum performance of the controller core is 600,000 IOPS.
The entire family of RAID controllers of the 7th series only supports miniSAS-HD ports.
For internal ports, the connector is SFF-8643 (internal mini-SAS HD),
for external - SFF-8644 (external mini-SAS HD).
Pay attention to the balance of bandwidths on the SAS and PCI-E side using the example of the 71605 controller - the only solution in the industry that has 16 SAS2 ports in a low-profile version.
Family 7E
RAID controllers for entry-level projects. Reduced RAM, compared with conventional 6th series controllers, simplified stack, no support for cache protection. They have a simplified stack, support only Simple Volume, JBOD, RAID 0.1, 10, 1E, that is, there is no support for RAID 5.5EE, 6, 50, 60, but support Hybrid RAID 1, 10 (see the “ Hybrid Volumes "in the chapter" Basic Functions of RAID Controllers "below).
Unlike the 6E, the 7E family supports expanders and has the same 8X PCI-E slot as controllers without an “E” index.
7Q family
The 7Q RAID controllers feature SSD caching. Supported cache allocation at the logical disk level. The remaining capacity can be used as a normal RAID volume. Both read and write cache is supported. For more information, see the section “SSD Caching” in the chapter “Basic RAID Controller Functions” below.
Summary table for the 7th series controllers.
Adaptec 8th RAID Series Controllers.
General characteristics of the 8th series controllers.
The 8th series of RAID controllers is the flagship group of RAID controllers at the beginning of 2015. And it is already based on SAS3 technology (12 Gb / s). The family includes the industry's only 16-port SAS 12 Gb / s RAID controller with built-in flash backup cache — all in the LP / MD2 form factor — ASR-81605ZQ. The industry's maximum 700,000 I / O operations per second (IOPS) for RAID controllers. Max Cache 3.0 — unique to the industry — is a layered management and caching software that provides storage with better cost-effectiveness and performance.
ASR-8885 has 8 internal / external SAS3 12 Gb / s ports in a low-profile LP / MD2 form factor:
• Based on SRCv RoC chip (RAID on Chip) PMC PM8063 16x SAS3 ports (12 Gb / s) PMC-Sierra (for more information, see
www.pmcs.com );
• Models with the maximum number of ports - 12 SAS 3.0 ports (12 Gb / s) and an 8x PCI-express Gen 3.0 slot;
• Cache memory - 1024 MB DDR3-1600 DRAM;
• HD miniSAS connectors.
o Optionally, use the Adaptec Flash Module Cache Security Kit (AFM-700), which includes:
