Russian students again won first place in the international final of the Imagine Cup with the game OVIVO
Last week, Seattle hosted the largest Microsoft student event — the international final of the Imagine Cup competition and the international summit of student partners. More than 30 top teams from around the world fought for the right to become the best in their categories.
For the second year in a row, a team from Russia won in the category of games: this time the winners were students from St. Petersburg who presented their psychedelic game OVIVO to the competition . And the main super-finalist was a team from Brazil with a draft system that allows you to automate the creation of patterns of clothing, including for people with disabilities.

The OVIVO game (which you can play here ) is a black and white platformer with variable gravity. Despite the initial asceticism of the game, as black and white silhouettes turn into complex optical illusions inspired by Escher’s graphics, plant and animal forms. It is not surprising that such original graphics and the wonderful performance of the guys conquered the jury members and allowed them to win.
During the final, the guys not only presented their project to the jury, but also saw a lot of interesting things! Probably the most interesting thing is participation in the Holographic Academy training, in which they managed to see the future with their own eyes - augmented reality through a holographic helmet. And not only to see, but also to program something with your own hands! The guys talk about their impressions of the event and of the competition in general in a video interview.
In addition to the traditional performance and communication with the jury during individual sessions, on the last day our team, along with other winners, spoke to the 7000th audience. The super-jury was Alex Kipman, the creator of HoloLens, Jens Bergensten , the main developer of Minecraft, and Thomas Middleditch , who plays the lead role in the TV series “Silicon Valley”. The winners award was presented by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
It is very nice to see that students from Russia receive a worthy recognition at an international competition! It’s even more pleasant that the IzHard team that made the OVIVO game first met at the Imagine Cup hackathon in St. Petersburg less than a year ago, where for the first time the guys tried themselves in game development. In just 9 months, the guys not only became the best student team in the world, but also took part in a whole series of events and conferences (including GamesJam ), and in the spring of 2016, as the winners of the Imagine Cup, they will present their game at the PAX game developer conference East in Boston.
You can wish the guys good luck and leave your feedback on the game in the VKontakte community , and see the photo impressions of the final in Instagram . We hope that the experience of the team from St. Petersburg will inspire our readers, students to follow them through, learn to translate their ideas into software products that are in demand all over the world!
