We love working with data and monitor everything. A few weeks ago we decided to chatter whoever presses the keys and moves the mouse during working hours.
We have a small team: 1 designer, 2 developers and 2 content managers. Of course a couple of managers and one data scientist.
We installed a simple Google Chrome plugin on every laptop. During the week, the plugin collected statistics on keystrokes and mouse movement and sent to our tracker
t.onthe.io .

Developers
Developers showed unexpected results. They press fewer keys than editors and managers - about 4K per day.

Developers have three times fewer characters than other team members.
The most popular
Command key (on Macs) - 20% of all clicks. In second place is a space. They use
Tab 5 times more often than the rest of the team.
Their activity during the day (or night) is unpredictable, and the schedule has many smooth sections and sharp jumps. This is because they can think long over the decision, and after the insight, start urgently implementing it.
Managers
Judging by the number of keystrokes, managers win. They print 3 times more developers and even 1,5 times editors.

Managers type over 23K characters per day. On average, they press a key every 3 seconds.
The schedule of activity of managers during the day is always stable - they write and receive letters all the time.
Editors
Editors print twice as many developers and make 2 times fewer mistakes or typos than all the other team members (the
backspace key
is used much less often).

And the most popular button was the "space" - 10% of all clicks.
The activity schedule of editors is not the most stable, but it is quite predictable. In the morning, actively published articles. The rest of the day they edit them, read them again and again, in general they work more sluggishly.
Designer
Designer’s indicators are also quite predictable -
Command and
Backspace make up 20% of all keystrokes. It produces more mouse movements than developers and content managers combined. His mouse runs up to one kilometer each day and up to 20 km per month.

Office Manager
The office manager is inactive, doing only 2K clicks per day. This is 5 times less than managers. In 11% of the clicks uses a space.

Unpopular keys
It's funny that the least popular keys are Capslock and the right mouse button. About 0.1% of all clicks. It's time to make some changes in the structure of the keyboard.

Who is the winner
So, we have managers who click the most buttons, designers are champions in the number of mouse movements and editors who make 2 times fewer mistakes than the whole team on average.

Any idea what we should do next?
