Interesting documents about the monopoly of Microsoft

In the court of Polk County, Iowa, for nearly seven years, the antimonopoly process has been pursued in a collective action of consumers against Microsoft. This is a “fragment” of a large antimonopoly process of the past years, according to which the corporation was able to conclude an amicable settlement with the majority of states. However, some states, including Iowa, refused to accept the terms of Microsoft and continued the struggle.

Iowa residents are demanding compensation from Microsoft, which will pay damages for antitrust violations and high prices for MS Windows, MS Office and other products.

Just a couple of months ago, the judge allowed me to post on the Internet some confidential documents that appear in the framework of the judicial process. Basically, this is the correspondence of Microsoft employees over the past twenty years, including Bill Gates and other top managers. Sometimes she is just shocked by her frankness and cynicism.

On the website Linux.org.ru published a selection of the most egregious texts. Links to some of them we post here with comments.

Gates explains why the browser should be integrated, and HTML - incompatible with the standard. Otherwise, “middleware will capture the operating system” ( PDF ).

Some quotes from published correspondence may shock a person unfamiliar with modern business methods.

Gates: “My partners and I worked so much on ACPI, but Linux didn’t have a finger, but everything works great for them. We must take action. For example, to patent something ”( PDF ).

Undocumented API functions that have long been hidden from everyone except the MS Office team that implemented them ( PDF , PDF , PDF ).

There are many other interesting things in the list of published documents . For example, the proposal to flash Windows 2.0 in the BIOS; failure to start on DR-DOS; “Blacklists” of companies and people; preparation for the transition to RISC in 1992; fighting third-party add-ons over Windows.
