The trigger to the desire to discuss this issue served as a joyful post on Facebook to one friend about how happy she was, that she was going to Milan for a conference on psychology. Familiar is far from nendavno graduated from the university and it seems that rose-colored glasses should have been gone for a long time. To my comic comment that “yes, girls love shopping)” she replied: “no shopping, I’m happy about the very fact that I will go to the conference”. Why, she did not read the report, as well as 99.5% of the participants. I also note that she went there for free, like 99.5% of the participants.
Then I remembered my own, also free trips to programming conferences ... and came to the disappointing conclusion that the same 99.5% of conference participants do not need these conferences in FIG.
I explain my logic point by point.
1. Getting new information? In the age of global Internet, all new, all new ideas are first publicly (or semi-publicly) discussed there, in the communities of enthusiasts and professionals who move programming, create new tools, libraries, and so on. Conferences are late with novelty for months, sometimes for years. But even in those few cases when they are late (the announcement by the Firm of the new version of the OS and its API for developers), the Internet is still a free alternative, in which there are as many if not more information on the topic.

2. Party and meeting with useful people? Again, for virtual parties and dating (if they are needed) there is the Internet, soap, specialized Internet forums, githubs, etc. etc.
3. Free ride, rest from work, inspection of a new place (the same Milan), tusnya not on business (beer, games), shopping, etc.? Of course. But very few people admit that he likes this in conferences. Nevertheless, they prefer to talk about "high".
What do you think about this?
