"Moore's Law" at Risk - Intel Delays New Chips

Intel stated that the delivery of its next-generation Cannonlake chips would be delayed for half a year, which was the second time in a row when they did not release their new processor according to the two-year cycle of Moore's Law. This continues the current trend: last year's 14-nm Broadwell chip was delayed, and even the releases of Haswell and Ivy Bridge took place in violation of the planned schedule. Intel reported that the delay with its new 10-nm chips is associated with the increased complexity of producing transistors of such small sizes. Responding to the expressed dissatisfaction, CEO Brian Krzanich stated that: "The last two technological transitions have shown us that the cyclical nature of Moore's law today is rather two and a half years than the traditional two."

Commenting on the lack of a range of new chips, Intel said that they were going to release a new Kaby Lake chip using 14-nm technology, based on the Skylake architecture. Krzanich said that: “As we expect, this correction in our plans will allow realizing new opportunities and increasing productivity, opening the way to a smooth and consistent transition to 10-nm technology.” Nevertheless, he acknowledged that in the current conditions Intel has to work in more intense production cycle than it was before. This does not bode well for the computer industry, which is already in difficult conditions , since consumers have less incentive to switch to new products.

Intel also acknowledged that the current demand for new computers is lagging behind the predicted values and expect that by the end of the year the situation may worsen further. Nevertheless, the expected entry into the Windows 10 operating system market on July 29 may revive the situation. “In Windows 10 we will see a lot of really good innovations, such as“ Windows 10 Hello ”, which provides a login on the face image and does not require the use of all your passwords, the Start screen ... the use of touch functions, under which new versions of games are already released - which means they will require computers to work with modern features and configurations, ”said Krzanich. Despite the grim situation of the computer industry, Intel still manages to pull out quarterly revenue to exceed the expectation level of $ 13.2 billion, thanks to the concentration of efforts in the data center segments, the Internet of things and memory chips.
