Pros and Cons: Tier Assessment System

It is difficult to imagine a month without news about failures in IT systems of large companies. Beginning from transport networks and to financial market players, everyone in one way or another faces problems that can be attributed to the topic of IT infrastructure.

Today we decided to touch on one of the parts of this question and talk about Tier certification.

What are we talking about

When we talk about the reliability of IT systems, we should not limit ourselves exclusively to network security issues. There can be little things here - everything is important from the quality of equipment maintenance to direct cooling and power supply to the data center.

To unify the evaluation process, Tier was proposed. This rating system has 4 levels: from I (lowest reliability) to IV (highest).

It allows you to look at the level of IT infrastructure preparation, security at the physical level, and even evaluate the structure itself, where the data center is located. The certificate is confirmed by international organizations Uptime Institute or TIA (Telecommunications Industry Association).

What is the problem

The point is how the certification process works. Today everything is such that you can not even go through official procedures, but simply declare the general compliance with the requirements of Tier. It will be enough for ordinary people, but the actual compliance of the IT infrastructure with the declared level will remain questionable before the first problems appear.

Another tricky move is getting a certificate for the documentation for the data center. Who will check the consistency of the final design and the data center fillings with what is stated in the documents is another big question. In this case, you can even get a copy of a valid certificate, but it will not tell you anything about how this data center is doing right now.

All these loopholes cause resentment of those who pass certification in strict accordance with the accepted procedure and spends time and money on it. Other companies simply mislead customers, which can not but affect the attitude towards the entire IT infrastructure market.

As a result, a number of respected players in the data center market waive additional costs and buy similar certificates for documentation for a part of their data centers.

What do with it

Not so bad. Official appraisers understand how things are going. Uptime Institute (one of these organizations) has refused to provide certificates for documentation for data centers located in North America.

Why is there - this region was the most problematic in terms of competitors' complaints about each other. It is possible that this rule will soon become universal for all other data centers.
