I know that the topic is ambiguous and I have already been severely banned from SE (as a result, I found out that they don’t like such topics there), but the idea of the topic has long been in the air. And I want to discuss it with the community. Please do not judge strictly.
It has long been considered that the site is not banned for external factors, etc. but my experience tells me that everything is far from true. There are many examples of how competitors drove sites from the top ten to the last places for high and mid-frequency queries.

There are a lot of ways, but they are based on making the site a victim in the eyes of search engines as a malicious violator.
The method is based on mass link spam of forums, guestbooks, blogs, etc. The main thing is that all these links appear in large quantities, in a short period of time and at the same time be compiled from the point of view of maximum discrepancy to the recommendations of search engines.
Ban is unlikely to receive such a victim site, but it’s just elementary to fly from its position. Moreover, the duration of such a drawdown from several days to months.
What is the result?
As a result, if the site is commercial, then this is a loss of profit. At the same time, if the competitor’s site was on page 2–3 of its issue, then the competitor is improving positions on the queries that interest him. For example, imagine that the victim site was in 3rd place, and the competitor site was at 11. The victim site crashes out of the top, and the competitor site is in the top ten. Well, where there is money there is a business that serves this money.
And all this without intervention on the site of the victim. No DDOS `s, etc. illegal things naturally.
Actually the question is: do you think that in the near future an attack on competitor sites will become a new type of business? Will firms and private individuals appear for whom this will be the main income?
