Windows Defender stops only 16% of viruses

Users willing to entrust the security of their computers to the Microsoft Windows Defender anti-virus built into the Windows Vista operating system are at risk of becoming victims of remote hackers, InfoWorld writes.

A two-week study of the capabilities of Windows Defender, conducted by Webroot, a well-known manufacturer of antivirus products, brought disappointing results: it turns out that Microsoft’s defender is able to detect and neutralize only 16% of malicious programs. Webroot employees “fed” Windows Defender 25 different viruses, and the application missed all Trojans and spyware, as well as keyloggers. And although most of the pests, as it turned out, were incompatible with Windows Vista and could not be installed, the emergence of new Vista-oriented viruses would negate all the protection provided by Windows Defender.
