Sencha: About licenses and restrictions

In one of my projects, I wanted to try something new and somehow improve the admin panel of my CMS. Having considered different MVC / MVVM JavaScript framework, the choice fell on ExtJS. I have long paid attention to him and knew that they have a license for "free use." Going to the Sencha ExtJS page, I found that the free version is provided only for 30 days , and the price for the paid version is not that it bites, it is ready to chop your arm to your elbow (from $ 3,855.00 for ExtJS 5). So where did the free ExtJS license go?

Some developers have suggested that Sencha decided to abandon the free distribution of their products. But it is not. I did not immediately find a license section on their website. And now I will tell you in detail about them and how to get a GPLv3 license (GNU General Public License version 3).

Licenses

Sencha has five types of licenses for its products: Commercial License, Open Source (GPLv3) License, Trial Licensing, Custom Use Licensing, Extension Licensing.

Commercial License

A commercial license provides for the creation of closed source software (including commercial), except for development tools, libraries, application designers, and any application that is used for software, applications, or websites of web developers and designers. This license provides for the use of a license at each workplace and provides the ability to change license users every 6 months. Also, users of the license ensure that third parties for which they develop the application are licensed to use the software. In some cases, you can transfer your license to third parties, but there are cases when they must have their commercial license. In case of violation, you may be charged with violation of intellectual property rights.

You can buy licenses only in multiples of 5 from Sencha, you cannot buy 1, 3 or 7 licenses, only 5, 10, etc.

A license is purchased for a company and issued to a developer; it will not work to transfer one license to another company. If you make an application to order, then your customer must also buy this package of 5 licenses (which they mark as developer). Even more interesting, if you make some decision that you sell yourself (not cloud, but standalone), then whoever buys your product owes $ 3225 more (for ExtJS) to pay Sencha! It is very cool.

There is no separation between the SDK and the license for delivery to the production server. All one and the same. - kibitzer

Persons purchasing a commercial license receive a technical support and service for the selected product.

The service "Technical Support and Service" includes:

Credits are the internal “currency” to pay for Technical Support. 175 credits are included in the package for 5 developers.

Custom Use Licensing

The license includes a commercial license and the removal of restrictions on the development of development tools, libraries, application designers, and any application that is used for software, applications, or websites of web developers and designers. To obtain this license, you must contact one of the offices of Sencha.

Extension licensing

A license to create a commercial extension ExtJS, Sencha GXT, Sencha Touch, if the extension adds significant value to the product and features functionality.

To use this license, you must register and fulfill a number of conditions:

Trial licensing

A license that is valid for 30 days and allows you to convert your software to a commercial license. Since the developed product under the GPLv3 license is not possible to transfer under a commercial license. When developing it is necessary to comply with all the requirements of a commercial license. Your product is forbidden to publish and distribute with this license.

Open Source (GPLv3) License

This is a free license with the opening of source codes, but with the condition that your product will be provided under one of the licenses of free software compatible with the GPL . You can also make changes to the source code of the Sencha product. You can get it here .

Here I will not talk about all Sencha software products (if you wish, I can write a separate article on all products). Here I will give a summary table of license sets and cost (price / number of jobs) of a commercial license for each product.
