Microsoft has announced additional support for Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE) operating systems. These products of the company will be supported for 5 years (until April 2009) as part of Mainstream Support and another 5 years - Extended Support. Previously, developers have reported a similar support program for Windows XP Professional,
reports ArsTechnica .
Mainstream Support assumes support in case of any incidents, fixes (both patches that fix vulnerabilities and software updates), warranty claims, changes in the interface, the ability of users to request new features, and access to the Microsoft Knowledge Base and all materials on company sites. Within Extended Support, there are no non-security updates, free incident support, warranty claims, and new feature requests.
Microsoft is not the first time ready to provide extended support for its products: for example, Windows 98 was provided by the company's “help” until June 2006 (instead of January 2004).
