Every fifth copy of Windows is installed illegally.
According to BetaNews , on Monday, Microsoft revealed the statistics collected by the Windows Genuine Advantage utility since July 2005. The WGA software client requests a mandatory validation of a license on the Windows OS when trying to download software updates from the company's website. Microsoft claims that more than 500 million copies of the OS have been verified.
Statistics MS says that 22% of all scanned computers have a copy of Windows installed illegally. Despite the impressiveness of this figure, it is still less than the world average prevalence of pirated software (according to the BSA ), which is at 35%.
Quite expectedly, among IT professionals and the public interested in it, distrust of such data has already arisen, since for many people the share of pirated copies of Windows on the market seems much greater.
