Swift 2.0 will be open source at the end of the year.

On June 8, at the annual WWDC , Apple announced a new version of the Swift 2.0 language.

As written in the Swift blog and on the Swift developer page , the new version received better performance, a new error handling API, improved language syntax, and the function of checking the availability of Swift functions for target operating systems.

In my opinion, the most interesting thing is that Apple opens the Swift code. Yes, Swift 2.0 is an open source programming language.

Not strong in licenses, but as far as I understand, the language will be opened under one of the licenses from the list of the Open Source Initiative .

At the initial stage, it is planned to release the language under OS X, iOS and Linux, and the source code will contain the compiler and standard libraries.

While I was reading reviews of various online publications about yesterday’s presentation, I came across different opinions about this news. There was a comment that the community as a whole will have the light bulb, that the language has become open source and until it is ported to all possible development environments (the commentary has been written about Visual Studio), and large users will start using it corporations such as Microsoft and Google, especially nothing will change.

I also met with the opinion that this will greatly change the language for the better and that this is a great gift from Apple.

One thing is clear - the opening of the Swift code will again create a lot of controversy, just as its appearance created new themes for holivars.

In my opinion, time will show who will be right in reality. Nevertheless, it is interesting to hear the views of habrakupateley in this regard.
