Study: Unused Data Center for $ 30 Billion

In our blog, we wrote about how the development of cloud technologies and virtualization has changed the approach to building data centers and considered the issue of reducing the cost of relevant technologies in relation to Moore's law . "Clouds" and virtualization have long been used to solve pressing business problems, however, as it turns out, it's never too late to start optimizing.

Michael Wizard, a journalist with DatacenterKnowledge, highlighted one of his notes a recent study , which was conducted by Anthesis Group in cooperation with Stanford University. According to the data obtained, 10 million virtually unused physical servers are located in world data centers.

According to the authors of the report, the cost of maintaining all of this unused infrastructure costs about $ 30 billion. "Surprising", but these sad figures are nothing but the result of managerial errors and poor communication between various departments in organizations. The most obvious solution is to revise the approaches to managing data centers towards centralization.

This approach remains the only alternative to the transition to the use of services of providers of virtual infrastructure. The longer the current installations, which have already led to billions of dollars of money spent to the wind, will be used, the more money will be wasted, and it will be harder for businesses to convince themselves of the need to purchase physical equipment.

Various experts talk about the apparent contrast in the use of analytical tools. Thus, a virtual infrastructure provider is interested in maximum equipment efficiency and cost minimization of hundreds of customers, which is a much more significant motivation compared to the “routine”, which the tracking of resources consumed by applications on the company's own equipment turns into.

Given the complexity of forecasting the cost of expensive equipment and the work of engineers, a business often buys server capacity for future use. In the future, life makes its own adjustments, real needs do not grow so much, but the equipment has already been purchased, maintained and idle.

It is vitally important for organizations to rationalize the set of applications they use, discarding unnecessary ones. This will not only reduce the number of physically involved servers, but also lead to additional savings on the purchase of software licenses, which is now installed on the "comatose" equipment.

PS We try to share not only our own experience on the service of providing virtual infrastructure 1cloud , but also to talk about related areas of knowledge in our blog on Habré. Do not forget to subscribe to updates, friends!
